Getting Started With Radio Controlled Helicopters

Radio controlled helicopters have become more affordable and accessible in the last few years and many have flocked to join this hobby. For someone who is knew to the trade there is a lot to learn both in terms of the knowledge of the machine, how it works and also how to pilot it. Even though it is a hobby for most it can become quite stressful as it is a reasonably expensive hobby depending on the model of machine you choose the fly. As an experienced pilot of all things radio controlled I always recommend to start with a n electric medium sized remote control helicopter. These can be flown in doors (and outdoors depending on the weather) and can take a decent amount of punishment.

For beginners I recommend starting out with a coaxial radio controlled helicopter as it offers the best balance, stability in the air and also has the power to have some fun with. Coaxial remote controlled helicopters have 2 rotor blades which rotate in opposite directions giving a smoother flight and experience. We also recommend starting out with something that has no more than 4 channels as the more channels a helicopter has the more complicated it can be to operate.

Once you have a coaxial helicopter in mind make sure it is affordable and indoor. As you are only learning you will no doubt have a few collisions so it is best not to take any chances on an expensive machine. Once you are comfortable flying in doors you can take your helicopter outdoors on a calm day and practice before making the jump up to a more advanced machine! Most of all though just remember to have fun as that it was it is all about!
